From the Show
What should Christians know about how to properly use social media?
I also worry that social media has made it possible for our base instincts to come out. You mentioned being argumentative, absolutely, the inconvenience of having to think before you hit send, of looking people in the eyeballs and engaging in real conversations instead of just expressing yourself, these inconveniences are actually really important for our maturity, for godliness. When we misrepresent people we were violating the ninth commandment. We are bearing false witness about them. And the more careless we are because of our technological habits, the easier it is for us to commit sins like that. There are many other sins that we fall into very easily because we don't take the time to think about it. We're private. You know, ‘who will find out?’ We are able to shoot our mouth off without face to face corrections from others who are present there. I also fear that social media has made it possible for every idea to be treated equally no matter how wacky it is. We have more access to information than ever, but are we wiser? Are we really more knowledgeable? Are we really freer and more fulfilled than our grandparents who really knew their neighbors? I'm not sure. So, I think, as with all God's gifts, we need to use social media thoughtfully, wisely, and moderately, especially as pastors, we need to be careful not to fall into that. Pastors often don’t realize the influence they have and we should not abuse that. — Michael Horton
