When the Bible Speaks, God Speaks

God talks to us. He speaks baby talk. He speaks through the Bible.

As one great pastor in the ancient church put it:

When the Bible speaks, God speaks. – Augustine

Did you know that God speaks to us even more directly somewhere else? God addresses us personally. I’m not kidding.

So where exactly does God talk? Where can I go to hear him speak to me?

God talks to us in the public gathering of his people each Sunday. He does this through the preaching of his law and gospel. Huh? No, you heard me right.

Through the act of preaching, we hear God speak to us. Even if it sometimes feels like a long and boring monologue, whenever the pastor is making sense of God’s word for us, explaining how each passage in the Bible points us to the person and work of Jesus Christ, and telling us that our sins are forgiven in Jesus—God is talking.

It’s no longer our pastor. Jesus Christ himself is speaking to his beloved bride through the preached Word. It’s a strange thing to think that something so ordinary is used by God to accomplish the extraordinary.

Through words, God spoke the world into existence.

Through more words, God is speaking Christians into existence.

Through words, God is raising the dead.

That is the power of the preaching of the cross. This is the power of God unto salvation for all who believe (Rom. 1:16–17).
