How Does God Punish Us For Our Sin?

From the Show

When I sin, it feels like I'm separated from God and that I can't even pray to him. I would like to know how do we get back to God? How does God punish us for our sins?

I think one of the most heartbreaking stories in the Bible is the story of when Peter denied Jesus. Jesus had never turned his back on Peter but during Jesus’ hour of greatest need, Peter abandoned him. When the crowd confronted Peter about whether he knew Jesus, “Peter began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, ‘I do not know the man.’ It was right then that Peter remembered that Jesus had foretold his sin and Peter began to sob.” while Jesus was dying, Peter hid in cowardice. And maybe you've shared in those tears and experienced the pain of betraying the Lord who has never done you wrong. It's in this moment that we expect Jesus to say, ‘I've had enough of you.’

What did Jesus say to Peter and to the rest of the disciples who deserted him after his resurrection? We read about it in John 21:12: come and have breakfast. The Apostle John tells us that Jesus cooked a meal for his fickle followers and invited them to eat with him. You know what, after you have sinned Jesus offers to feed you too. When the church gathers together to take communion, Jesus is setting a table for you to come and be nourished by him. Once again, a table where you can experience His love and His forgiveness. If you're weighed down by your failure, remember these things. Jesus is advocating for you and praying for you. He does discipline us because he loves us, and he's still offering to feed you. — Adriel Sanchez
