Did Jesus Go to Hell Before His Resurrection?

From the Show

Did Jesus go to hell before his resurrection?

Jesus says, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit,” and then he told the thief on the cross, in verse 43 of the same chapter, “you will be with me in paradise.” I think when we talk about his descent into hell we're talking about him enduring hell on the cross for us. If it turns out that Jesus went to Hades, you know, the waiting room, to preach the gospel to folks who were drowned by the flood in Noah's day, that's fine with me. That's terrific. The more the merrier. But I do believe that the descent into hell itself, not just whatever you do with Hades and 1 Peter 3, but his descent into hell, was his bearing God's wrath on the cross for us. — Michael Horton

Questions in this Episode

1. What does 1 John 2 mean when it says not to be attached to the things of this world? How does this fit with being appreciative and thankful for God’s creation?

2. I believe churches should format their liturgies to a regulative form and scripture-based worship. For this is Gods prerogative on how to approach him. Now, my question is, how can we reconcile this to the dancing of David? Others justify this saying that church worship must be like David’s, without limits.

3. When the creeds talk about Jesus descending into hell, what exactly does that mean? How should we understand this?

4. Isaiah 6:9 cannot be referring to Jesus when it says, ‘Everlasting Father.’ I’m confused about why Isaiah is applying the Father to Jesus? If Jesus and the Father are distinct persons how does this fit?

5. Is it fair to say that Israel was the Old Testament church? I have heard you say something like this before, but shouldn’t we keep Judaism and Christianity separate?
