Learning to Love God With Our Hearts and Minds

From the Show

Does the head or the intellect ever get in the way of the heart?

Think of when Jesus is with Martha [at] the raising of Lazarus, and Jesus says to Martha, “do you believe in the resurrection?” Basically, she's thinking it's a doctrinal quiz, “is this really a good time, at a funeral, to give me a doctrine quiz?” “Yeah, yeah. I believe that he will rise again in the resurrection of the dead.” And Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. Do you believe this?” And then she confessed, “yes, I believe you are the Son of God who is coming into the world.” See, that's the key. It's not that we don't need knowledge, all we need to do is feel it or do it, no. We need the right kind of knowledge to know Jesus, not about Jesus only, but to know Jesus. But [the point is], we can't know Jesus without knowing certain things about Jesus, namely, that he's the resurrection and the life in that passage. So, it's really important, I think, for us not to put head and heart in opposition. You can't have a genuinely biblical experience of something or someone you do not know. — Michael Horton
