What Does It Mean for Christianity If Jesus Never Rose From the Dead?

From the Show

What does it mean for Christianity If Jesus never rose from the dead?

If I weren't a Christian, I would give up on any kind of truth in the whole realm of religion. I would just say that it's basically all made up: "people just kind of come up with their idea of who they want to worship, what they want to worship, and how they want to live. And I don't need that." That's exactly what I would do. And that's exactly what Paul says makes sense, if Jesus isn't raised. Here's what he says: 1 Corinthians 15, beginning at verse 14, “and if Christ has not been raised,” then haven’t you lived a good life anyway? Hasn't it been worthwhile even if it's not true? Haven't you been happier, and haven’t your teeth been whiter? No, no, no. That’s not what he says. “And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” — Michael Horton

Questions in this Episode

1. It seems like you teach a "once saved always saved" idea of salvation. How does this motivate us to grow in holiness?

2. When I read of Paul ‘doing what he shouldn't and not doing what he should,’ it doesn't sound like 100% repentance. I'm sure this isn't really the case, but the thought comes to mind.

3. In 1 Corinthians 15, what are the consequences if Jesus was not raised from the dead? What does this mean for you guys personally?

4. I have wanted to get married for a few years now, and I’m trying to be open to the possibility that God has called me to singleness. My question is, how can I know God’s will in this area?
