What Is The Difference Between Sins and Crimes?

From the Show

What is the difference between sins and crimes? When is a sin supposed to be a crime in the eyes of the government?

You know, we used to have our money back by the gold standard in. It was 1971 where President Nixon took us off of the gold standard. Now 1 dollar bills are just 1 dollar bills because the Treasury Department says so. There's nothing backing it. It doesn't correspond to any real value. And that's where I think we are now, as a nation, and as a civilization. When it comes to crime, it's just a crime because the state and the courts say so. Transgression against God, that's the gold standard. That's the real value backing the judge's gavel. But that gold standard has been taken away. Now, we're not living in the Old Covenant where the church is also a nation. It's not a crime to eat pork, either in the church or the state, God says now all things are common, only God's people are holy, but the moral law still stands above all laws of any nation. God will judge all crimes against him one day. Murder is wrong because it's an offense against God's very nature, from which the command is issued, “You shall not kill.” That's why we have every reason to oppose abortion on demand or euthanasia or racial violence and other forms of murder. So, the church reminds the state that there is a God above every president, Congress, and court, but the church alone is given authority to release sinners from the guilty verdict by the preaching of the Holy Gospel, and the secular powers alone are given the authority to enforce the law with the sword. — Michael Horton
